Conference Description

The user experience plays a critical role in an academic library’s success. The conference will begin with the staff of ACRL’s Project Outcome leading a hands-on preconference focusing on understanding and communicating the real impact our library programs and services have. Keynote speakers will continue the discussion on user experience by addressing changing student and user demographics as well as designing with a focus on the user.

Meet the Prospective Student, Gen Z

Gen Z. iGen. Centennials. The Über Generation. The names may change but one thing is certain, there is a new generation of student in our schools and on our campuses. Currently identified as the most racially diverse, the most technologically savvy, and far more pragmatic than their Millennial counter-parts, Generation Z will continue to challenge traditional programs and practices in education.  Nicole will discuss the major characteristics of Gen Z and subsequent impacts on educational approaches to engage the latest generation of students, while promoting diversity and fostering inclusion.

Preconference Session: Project Outcome
with Sarah Goek, Program Manager at the Association of College and Research Libraries

In this interactive workshop, attendees will learn how to use the Project Outcome for Academic Libraries surveys and resources. Project Outcome is a free toolkit that helps libraries measure four key learning outcomes – knowledge, confidence, application, and awareness – across seven library program and service areas. The survey topics cover: Instruction, Events/Programs, Research, Teaching Support, Digital & Special Collections, Space, and Library Technology. Project Outcome provides academic libraries of any size the means to easily measure outcomes in those areas and to use that data as the basis for continuous improvements and advocacy.

Prior to the workshop we recommend that participants register for Project Outcome, review basic materials in the toolkit, and consider a goal for outcome measurement at their library.

Learning Outcomes – participants will:

  • Measure meaningful learning outcomes using Project Outcome for Academic Libraries.
  • Use the Project Outcome for Academic Libraries toolkit to administer surveys, analyze results, and create reports.
  • Understand how other libraries have used outcome data for action.
  • Identify challenges and effective means of implementing outcome measurement to improve library services and advocacy.
  • Develop an action plan for successfully implementing Project Outcome at your library.

Project Outcome

Sara Goek is Program Manager at the Association of College and Research Libraries, where she contributes to efforts to improve research about academic library contributions to student learning and success. She is the project lead on the new Project Outcome for Academic Libraries toolkit. Prior to joining ACRL Sara worked as research faculty at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and as a lecturer, tutor, and post-doctoral researcher at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. She holds a PhD in History / Digital Arts & Humanities and an MA in Historical Research from UCC, and a BA in History and Irish Studies from Boston College.

Meet the Prospective Student, Gen Z

Gen Z. iGen. Centennials. The Über Generation. The names may change but one thing is certain, there is a new generation of student in our schools and on our campuses. Currently identified as the most racially diverse, the most technologically savvy, and far more pragmatic than their Millennial counter-parts, Generation Z will continue to challenge traditional programs and practices in education.  Nicole will discuss the major characteristics of Gen Z and subsequent impacts on educational approaches to engage the latest generation of students, while promoting diversity and fostering inclusion.

Nicole Eversley Bradwell is Director of Admissions at Ithaca College. Experienced and dedicated higher education leader with demonstrated success in leading and supporting teams to align and achieve goals. Committed to engaging in strategic, student-centered, and data-informed enrollment strategy initiatives with a focus on inclusion and developing authentic connections. Nicole Eversley Bradwell is the director of admission at Ithaca College. Nicole has spent nearly 25 years working in admission at the college, serving as director of admission since 2015. She has a record of student-centered leadership and has engaged in extensive undergraduate and international student recruitment, directed teams and many projects, and actively participates in campus-wide committees, including the President’s Advisory Council on Innovation, the Council on Diversity and Inclusion, and co-chaired the Ithaca College Middle States Self-Study Design & Delivery of Student Learning Experience Committee. She has served as an active mentor for the Martin Luther King Scholar Program and is an advisor for student organizations such as the Caribbean Students’ Association. In 2016, she received the Ithaca College Student Government Council Administrator of the Year award.

Friday Morning Session

Rachel Ivy Clarke is Assistant Professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies. Formerly the cataloging librarian at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Rachel Ivy Clarke is currently an assistant professor at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies. Her research focuses on the application of design methodologies and epistemologies to facilitate the systematic, purposeful design of library services and education. Her multiple-award-winning dissertation argues that librarianship is more appropriately viewed as a design field rather than a scientific one. She holds a BA in creative writing from California State University, Long Beach, an MLIS from San Jose State University, and a PhD from the University of Washington.
